LEADERSHIP
A globally renowned expert in climate change, environmental governance, and sustainable development, is the special envoy for climate change in the executive office of the president of Kenya. With over 30 years in senior public service, he has led key policies tackling Kenya’s environmental challenges and, as chair of the African Group of Negotiators, elevated Africa’s voice in global climate negotiations. He has served as president of the ICCM and on the UN Climate Finance Committee, and excels in treaty negotiations, marine resource management, and multilateral cooperation. His brand of leadership bridges policy, global diplomacy, and sustainability.
OUR MANDATE
The Office is mandated to advise the President of Kenya on climate change policy, coordinate stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector, and mobilise resources to advance Kenya’s national climate agenda.
Advising the President of Kenya on climate change policy and action, ensuring evidence-based decisions at the highest level of government.
Shaping national climate legislation and frameworks, building on Kenya’s position as one of Africa’s first countries to enact a comprehensive climate change law and policy.
Coordinating with civil society, the private sector, and development partners to mobilise resources and support for Kenya’s climate change agenda.
Bringing together government ministries, communities, and international institutions to align climate action across all sectors of the economy.
OUR GOALS
The Office works to drive climate-positive economic growth, scale high-integrity carbon markets, strengthen community resilience, and ensure transparent, inclusive climate solutions that benefit Kenya and the broader African continent.
Driving economic development that reduces emissions rather than increasing them, ensuring Kenya’s growth story is inseparable from its green transition.
Advancing high-integrity carbon markets as a tool to expand climate finance to developing nations, with the potential to reach $250 billion by 2050 in direct and leveraged finance.
Ensuring climate adaptation measures directly support Africa’s smallholder farmers and local communities, who remain the backbone of the continent’s food systems. Techreviewafrica
Promoting open, participatory development of climate solutions, ensuring communities have access to information and a voice in decision-making processes.
Linking food and nutrition security with climate adaptation efforts, including investment in agricultural research, forest conservation, and reforestation as strategies for long-term stability.
CLIMATE CHANGE DIPLOMACY
The Office represents Kenya in global climate negotiations, championing a unified African voice for climate justice, equitable financing, and accountability from developed nations. It co-chairs the Coalition to Grow Carbon Markets with Singapore and the UK, fosters South-South knowledge-sharing and solidarity, and pushes for Africa to shift from capacity-building to on-the-ground implementation, positioning Kenya as a leading force in global climate action ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
